Photographs of a Heron with Fishing Net on it's Beak
Great Blue Heron with Fishing Net Wrapped Around Beak ...
We saw this heron had what appeared to be 'fishing net' wrapped around it's beak in the fall of 2013 at the Nanaimo River Estuary.
It appeared to be able to catch and eat small items, as the fishing net prevented it from opening it's beak more than a very small amount.
We contacted the authorities, but were told that there was little that could be done until the heron was too weak to fly.
We tried to keep an eye on it, and took several photos with a 1,200mm and 2,400mm CAT lens.
A few weeks later we saw that it had removed over 90% of the net, and was observed flying strongly, and in the presence of a second heron (do not know if they were a mating pair).
